Reported average typing speeds vary because every study uses different passages, devices, durations, and populations. The number you see in an article is not a universal threshold.

Why averages differ

Test format is the biggest factor. A one minute test of common words tends to produce higher WPM than a ten minute test of difficult vocabulary. People who type daily as part of their job usually score higher than occasional users, so a self-selected sample is not the same as the general population.

Read the test conditions first
